Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE)

This 4-day (2 weekend) course is a condensed version of the US Airforce Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) school. The course includes 2-days of classroom and hands-on activities where you can practice the fieldcraft taught in the Airforce SERE Handbook.

Then, the second weekend you will be fully immersed in a 2-day Survival and Evasion exercise. As part of this exercise, you will practice your Survival and Evasion skills as you navigate miles into the woods evading hikers, four wheelers and the course cadre as needed. Yes, this means you will be staying overnight in the woods!  

This course is ideal for any outdoorsman, survivalist, or military or law enforcement members wanting to expand their survival and evasion knowledge.

Class Room Portion (First Weekend):

  • You will learn the survival techniques covered in the SERE Handbook that are specific to FL or similar climates. In other words, we will not be covering Ocean or artic survival in this class.
  • This includes instruction on:
    • Survival Priorities, SERE Medicine, Weather, Clothing, Survival Equipment, Shelter, Fire, Water, Food, Land Travel, River Travel, Signaling and Communication, and Evasion Techniques.

Field Craft/Survival Skills (First Weekend):

  • In between classroom lessons the first weekend will also include a number of hands-on exercises where you will be able to practice your field craft in a safe and controlled environment.
  • This includes:
    • Applying SERE medical knowledge to different scenarios, using your tools to build shelters, Building and setting up various forms of fire, obtaining and purifying water, and setting up mock signaling and communication techniques.

2-Day Immersion:

  • This 2-day exercise will mimic an evasion scenario. You and your group will apply your survival knowledge to avoid all contact with others in the forest.
  • This includes:
    • Practicing camouflage, light discipline, sound decline, maintaining security, concealing travel paths, crossing barriers, etc.
  • Navigation Equipment
    • Compass (with adjustable declination)
    • Protractor, Ruler, Small note pad and pencil with eraser
    • GPS (optional as backup for safety)
  • Clothing
    • Several sets of clothing that are appropriate for the climate and season
    • Boots/Pants/Long Sleeves/Hat (Extra clothing and socks recommended)
    • Rain gear
  • Survival Gear
    • Flash light
    • Sleeping System (Ground pad, Mosquito net, etc.)
    • Whistle, signal mirror
    • Fire starting gear
    • Rain cover or shelter
    • Waterproof bags
    • Survival knife, hatchet, other tools you would like
    • 50 feet of paracord
  • Food/Water
    • Water containers, water filtration equipment, water purification tablets
    • 2 Days’ worth of food (We will not be hunting although foraging is permitted)
  • Hygiene/Medical
    • Toilet Paper and Ziplock bags
    • Bug spray and sunscreen
    • Medical supplies (including prescription or over the counter medication that you may need. Think Allergies, Diarrhea, Headache, etc…)
    • Small Med Kit for minor injuries.
  • Cell Phone (with full battery and extra batteries)

Note: Since the woods are public land, and since we are not hunting, all firearms must be concealed per FL statutes.
